What you will study
You will study these eight mandatory units:
* Principles of Science (externally assessed)
* Chemistry and our Earth
* Energy and our Universe
* Biology and our Environment
* Application of Chemical Substances
* Application of Physical Science
* Health Applications of Life Science
* Scientific Skills (externally assessed)
You will also take a selection of optional units, those include:
*The Living Body
*Biotechnology Procedures and Applications
*Science in Medicine
*Exploring our Universe
Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C (or new grade 9-3) in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.
Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C (or new grade 9-4). This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

Your Course Structure
Classroom: 50%; Practical: 50%
How you will learn
You will learn through practical work in the laboratory, educational visits, and classroom activities.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
A wide variety of assessment methods will be used, including assessment of practical skills, presentations, laboratory reports, essay writing and model making.
Ten hours per week over five days. This is a full-time course and you will be expected to complete 10 hours of studying outside of lesson time per week.
Entry requirements
5 GCSEs 9-3, including maths or equivalent qualification. You must have a Grade 4 in Maths or Eng Language
You must, also, achieve a grade 3 in maths or equivalent. Alternative maths qualifications may be considered. This will be discussed on an individual basis prior to enrolment.

Further study
Success in this course will enable you to progress to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science as long as all entry requirements are met. Access to Higher Education courses may also be a progression to University to any students over 19 by the end of the course.
Career opportunities
A wide variety of career opportunities is available, including forensic scientist, science technician, medical laboratory technician, nursing and midwifery, medical research assistant. Some of these will require further study and training.
