Course Summary
The Level 3 Certificate in Food Science and Nutrition is equivalent in size to one A level. It is for students interested in learning about the food sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of HE courses, but not necessarily in food alone. It lends itself to sport, biology and health and social care as there are many cross curricular links.
Course Details
You will study 3 main units:
• Meeting the nutritional needs of specific groups
• Ensuring food is safe to eat
• Current issues in food science and nutrition
These units have been designed to support progression to a range of sector related courses in HE, and also to link with relevant occupational areas.
This qualification enables you to acquire substantial cross sector knowledge, as well as practical skills and techniques.
The course enables learners to develop:
• Skills for independent learning and development
• A range of generic and transferable skills
• The ability to solve problems
• The skills of project based research
• The ability to work in a professional environment
• The ability to apply learning in a vocational context
How will it be delivered and assessed?
50% coursework and practical and 50% exam, with the option of 1 re-sit if needed. 3 units over 2 years. Coursework externally assessed and practical internally assessed.
Entry requirements
Merit or above in Hospitality and Catering in Year 11. Alongside + 4 other Grade 9-4 GCSEs ideally in Science, PE and English (and the ability to cook confidently and independently).
