Content is split into three teaching modules in Year 12: development of practical skills in chemistry; foundations in chemistry; periodic table and energy; core organic chemistry. In Year 13, students will cover: development of practical skills in chemistry; physical chemistry and transition elements; organic chemistry and analysis. These units demand an element of problem solving, mathematical application and critical thinking.
Paper 1 lasts 2 hours 15 mins, is worth 100 marks and comprises 37% of the total A level.
Paper 2 lasts 2 hours 15 mins, is worth 100 marks and comprises 37% of the total A level.
Paper 3 is synoptic, lasts 1 hour 30 mins, is worth 70 marks and is worth 26% of the total A level.
5 GCSE at grade 5 or above. Students must have achieved grade 6 or above in Maths, 5 or above in English Language, and grade 6 or above in Chemistry (separates) or the Chemistry component in Combined Science.
Chemistry is a fast-moving and dynamic science. All of the teaching is in modern, well-equipped laboratories, enabling much of the practical work to be carried out on an individual or small group basis. In addition to the formal teaching and practical sessions, there are opportunities for students to arrange individual tuition with one of the full-time teachers. The specification has been developed in consultation with the Royal Society of Chemistry, GlaxoSmithKline and a large variety of teachers in OCR Centres throughout the country. There is plenty of practical work and this is integrated with the theoretical work.
