Our BTEC Level 3 Sport qualification is available as a number of options. Your choice will depend on your future career plans. This qualification supports a huge range of careers and future degree options in the sports industry.

Have you decided to pursue a career in the sports industry? Are you interested in more hands on roles such as coaching and instruction, or degrees in sports management? Then this course could be for you! 

The 2 A Level equivalent in the BTEC Level 3 Sport sees you studying the topics in our 1 A Level equivalent, and additional topics. 


The topics you study will prepare you for a varied range of roles and degree level courses, and ensure you are prepared for your future in this vibrant and rewarding sector. The range of topics you will study increases in line with the qualification level of your studies, but includes:

• Anatomy and physiology 

• Practical sports performance 

• Professional development in the sports industry 

• Sports psychology 

• Sports leadership 

• Fitness testing 

• Gym instruction 

• Coaching for performance 

You’ll gain experience of the sector by combining your learning in the classroom with direct industry experience through high quality work placements and trips and visits. Current students have developed their skills and knowledge through placements at Opta Sports, visits to the English Institute of Sport and physical activity at Rokt and outdoor challenge centres. 

This is a highly interactive course that will provide you with an excellent understanding of a wide range of sports pathways. The course has a strong practical element, which you will complete in our state of the art facilities including our Fitness Suite, Sports Barn, Sports Hall and Fitness Lab. 

Through your experience of practical activities and academic theory you will develop your self-confidence and communication skills. Group work, role plays and presentations will offer you the chance to develop as a student and prepare you for your next step. 

There’s plenty of opportunities outside of your studies. You’ll get lots of opportunities to gain additional qualifications such as your coaching qualification.

How will it be delivered?

Assessment is via presentations, group work and assignments and externally assessed exams. Your work will be graded at pass, merit or distinction giving you an overall grade at the end of the course

Entry requirements

Grade 4 in GCSE PE or a Pass in a vocational equivalent, if taken.
