  • Do you have a keen interest in Games Design, Media and Art and want to develop this interest and apply your skills in a technical capacity? This course will see you enjoying a range of experiences that see you applying these interests, whilst developing highly valuable communication and industry based skills, as you write proposals and pitches for your games commissions.

This one A Level equivalent will see you making digital games, from initial concept to design, development and programming. This will see you beginning to develop the technical skills need to work in the games industry.

While taking this qualification, you will be required to engage with sector employers as part of your course, where you will be given opportunities to develop practical skills in preparation for employment.

The qualification is designed to be studied over two years and is suitable for progression onto degrees in computer game development, computer game art and animation as well as employment and apprenticeships in similar areas. For progression to a degree course, you should normally study this qualification alongside other qualifications, such as an A Level or BTEC Extended Certificate in a different or complementary subject area.


The topics you study will prepare you for a varied range of roles and degree level courses. You will explore the following topics:

  • Digital games production
  • Digital media skills
  • 3D environments
  • Game engine scripting
  • Concept Art for Computer Games

Our dedicated Games Design experts will help prepare you for a future in the industry by helping you to develop your technical skills using the latest industry standard software including Adobe Creative Suite, 3D Autodesk Maya and Unreal Engine 4.

This is a highly interactive course, and you will benefit from the input of our visiting industry speakers and events such as our annual Games Design exhibition, where you will develop a project to a professional standard and showcase this at our exhibition.

Through your experience of practical activities and theory you will develop your self-confidence and communication skills. Group work, role plays and presentations will offer you the chance to develop as a student and prepare you for your next step.

You will also enjoy an annual visit to the Animex Animation and Gaming Festival where you will be able to enjoy talks from industry experts and see the latest developments and opportunities in the industry.

How will it be delivered?

Assessment is via presentations, group work and assignments and externally assessed exams. Your work will be graded at pass, merit or distinction giving you an overall grade at the end of the course.

Entry requirements

Grade 4 in GCSE Media Studies and/or Art is desirable. General entry criteria also applies.

Your next steps...

This course supports a wide range of creative media progression routes. Our students move on to degree courses such as Computer Games Art, Games Design, Media Studies, Games and Animation Production and Media Production. Students also progress to Degree Apprenticeships and as trainees with the industry.
